When two families sit down to discuss a marriage, one phrase comes up first: “kitne gun mile?” — how many gunas matched? It’s shorthand for Ashtakoot Guna Milan, the 36-point compatibility system from Vedic astrology. Here’s what those points actually measure.
The eight kootas (and their points)
“Ashtakoot” means eight factors. Each compares the bride’s and groom’s Moon sign and Nakshatra, and carries a different weight:
| Koota | Points | What it weighs |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Ego / spiritual compatibility |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction & control |
| Tara | 3 | Health & well-being |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical & instinctive compatibility |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Mental & intellectual bond |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament (Deva / Manushya / Rakshasa) |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Love, finances, family welfare |
| Nadi | 8 | Health & progeny |
Add them up and you get 36. That’s the famous number.
How to read the score
18 gunas is the floor, not the goal. The score opens the conversation — it doesn’t end it.
- Below 18 — needs a careful look; not an automatic “no.”
- 18–24 — a good, workable match.
- 25–32 — very good.
- 33–36 — excellent (and rare).
The two heaviest kootas — Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8) — carry 15 of the 36 points between them, which is why their doshas get so much attention.
Doshas and their cancellations
Classical texts don’t just flag problems; they also list parihara (cancellations). For example:
- Nadi dosha may be cancelled when both share the same sign but different Nakshatras, or the same Nakshatra but different padas.
- Bhakoot dosha can be softened when the lords of the two Moon signs are friends, or are the same planet.
This is the part a number alone can’t capture — and where an experienced reading matters.
Don’t forget Mangal dosha
Guna Milan looks at the Moon and Nakshatra. It does not by itself check Mangal (Manglik) dosha — Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. A strong match on gunas can still need a Manglik review, and Manglik–Manglik pairings often cancel the dosha entirely. Always check both.
Beyond the score
A genuinely good compatibility reading also weighs:
- The 7th house and its lord in both charts.
- Venus (love, marriage) and Jupiter (wisdom, for the bride traditionally).
- Current and upcoming dashas — are both people entering supportive periods?
- Real life — values, family, and choice. Astrology guides; it doesn’t override consent.
How DashaGuru does Milan
DashaGuru runs the full 36-guna Ashtakoot, flags Mangal dosha and the relevant cancellations, and then explains each koota in plain language — so you understand the result instead of staring at a number. Ask it anything, in your language, privately.
A match is a beginning, not a guarantee. Use the gunas to understand each other better — then build the rest with care.
