Walk into any market and someone will happily sell you a “lucky stone.” But in real Jyotish, a gemstone (ratna) is a prescription — chosen from your chart to strengthen a specific planet. Worn wrongly, a powerful stone can do the opposite of what you hoped. So let’s choose properly.
Nine planets, nine stones
Each of the navagraha has its ratna:
| Planet | Gemstone | Day | Finger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun (Surya) | Ruby (Manik) | Sunday | Ring |
| Moon (Chandra) | Pearl (Moti) | Monday | Little |
| Mars (Mangal) | Red Coral (Moonga) | Tuesday | Ring |
| Mercury (Budh) | Emerald (Panna) | Wednesday | Little |
| Jupiter (Guru) | Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) | Thursday | Index |
| Venus (Shukra) | Diamond (Heera) | Friday | Middle/Ring |
| Saturn (Shani) | Blue Sapphire (Neelam) | Saturday | Middle |
| Rahu | Hessonite (Gomed) | Saturday | Middle |
| Ketu | Cat’s Eye (Lehsunia) | — | — |
The golden rule
A gemstone is chosen for the planet that helps your lagna and current dasha — not for the planet that’s already troubling you.
This is the mistake markets encourage. The right approach:
- Find your benefic planets — usually the lagna lord and the lords of the trine houses (1, 5, 9).
- Match the dasha — a stone is most useful during the strengthened planet’s mahadasha/antardasha.
- Avoid clashing combinations — e.g., Diamond (Venus) and Ruby (Sun) can pull against each other; Blue Sapphire and certain stones don’t mix.
The gentle ones vs the powerful ones
- Gentle, broadly safe: Yellow Sapphire (Jupiter — wisdom, fortune, marriage) and Pearl (Moon — calm, emotional steadiness).
- Powerful, test first: Blue Sapphire (Saturn) is famously fast-acting — tradition says wear it on trial for 2–3 days first. Hessonite and Cat’s Eye (Rahu/Ketu) are also intense.
Choosing safely
- Insist on a natural, certified, untreated stone of adequate carat — quality matters more than size.
- Energise it: cleanse in raw milk/Ganga jal, recite the planet’s mantra the prescribed number of times on its weekday, then wear it on the right finger and metal.
- When unsure, prefer a rudraksha or a behavioural remedy first — they’re effectively risk-free.
How DashaGuru guides you
DashaGuru reads your whole chart — lagna, benefics, and current dasha — and suggests gemstones only when they actually help, with the day, finger, metal and mantra. No fear, no upsell: if a simpler remedy is better for you, it’ll say so. You can also browse certified stones in the in-app store.
The right ratna can be a quiet, steady support. The wrong one is just an expensive accessory — so let the chart, not the shopkeeper, decide.
